About Us

It all started when I was gifted a small crochet kit by my son. Having never crocheted before, but with a love of creating and trying new things, I decided to give it a go. Very quickly I picked up the basics and began searching for more sophisticated patterns. This led me to find a design for a crotched donkey online. I started making them in an array of colours and showcasing my work on Facebook. Soon, people as far as Canada were requesting to buy one. I loved the idea that I could create opportunities for friends and families to gift my handmade creations.

That same year, I happened to go on holiday to Harris & Lewis. With a genuine love of Scotland and its history, I came across a shop in Stornoway where I purchased a bundle of Harris Tweed off cuts. I had no idea what I would do with them, but I was drawn to their colours, patterns and textures. I began to read about the history of Harris Tweed and appreciated the care and protections put in place to preserve its heritage and ensure its authenticity. Having taught myself to crotchet, I realised that I could teach myself to sew, and this could be a genuine way in which to combine my love for Scottish heritage with creating unique products.

After buying a sewing machine and embarking on a very steep learning curve, I began making glasses cases, fabric baskets and eventually some purses. Lots of people around me started encouraging me to put my creations out there, so – very hesitantly – I began showcasing my designs on Facebook and at local craft markets. I was blown away by the interest and started experiencing greater demand, with private messages requesting personalised colourways and products. I went on to make messenger bags, make-up bags and more. I realised that I had to develop a brand for my products and decided to incorporate Tay into the name, as I have always lived in and around the Dundee and Tayport area. Hence CraftTay Creations by Helen was born. This name really helped me establish my products; however, I began thinking of how I could upscale my brand image. I wanted to stay true to the roots of my materials, my products and my passions, so I finally decided on Loch & Loom to capture the essence of Scotland and the methods in which the materials and products are made.

Now, having learnt more about the origins of my designs and products I invite you to explore my website and hopefully find something special that has been made with love and care in every step…
